2021, with 7 days of new iPhone sales, would sit pretty close to the 2015 dot at 6 days. At the bottom-left, you see 2020 at zero days of new iPhone, and the worst performer relative to the rest of the fiscal year. You can see that the number of days they have a new iPhone for sale in September has a strong, but not determinative influence on the quarter’s performance. The Y-axis on that chart is Apple’s Q4 iPhone net sales as a percentage of Q1 through Q3. They did, but it is only 7 days of sales in Q4. But that also set up a big YoY for Q4 2021 if Apple could deliver an iPhone in September. So the YoY Q4 iPhone net sales were pretty grim, down 21% from a not particularly high 2019 base. Sometimes, Q4 is the second-best quarter on the calendar after Q1.īut September 2020 was a difficult time, and iPhone came out on a staggered schedule in October and November. The fiscal year ends in September, so that means the highest volume days of the year typically come right at the end of the fiscal year. Since 2013, Apple has been having their iPhone launch in mid-September. This always seemed far-fetched to me, and based on a misunderstanding of the bands supported on the phone. In the category of rumors that turned out not to be true, iPhone will not be getting emergency satellite communications. I don’t think this will have a big effect on the Wearables segment. Apple announced it, but pushed off the release date to sometime this fall. In contrast to iPhone, it looks like the rumors of manufacturing snags on Watch 7 were true. Their advantage here is going to be difficult to maintain. The chip unit has undergone a couple of years of talent exodus, first to Nuvia, now absorbed into Qualcomm ( QCOM), and now to a RISC-V startup, Rivos. This was a power consumption year, and we see the effects in increased battery life. Regarding the A-series and battery life, Apple has years where they focus on pushing the performance on A-series forward, and years where they focus on slimming power consumption. Most of these features are made possible by the machine learning cores on Apple’s A-series system-on-a-chip, or “SoC,” which runs iPhone and most iPads, and the multilayered image capture pipeline they have been developing for years. It really is an everyday camera for photo and video pros now. Apple continues to think this is the most important feature on the phone after battery life, and the upgrades this year are a little mind-blowing, especially on the Pro models. The focus on this year’s iPhone seems to be once again the camera. This is important because it more or less guarantees that Apple’s string of giant quarterly YoY growth rates in fiscal 2021 will continue in Q4.īut that also means that Q1 2022, which starts in October, is the beginning of four very tough YoY comps for Apple. There was not a lot that was unexpected at Apple’s ( NASDAQ: AAPL) Tuesday iPhone event until the very end when they announced that iPhone would ship on September 24 with big implications for Q4 reporting, likely to drop in about six weeks.
