![]() iOS 15’s biggest change comes to Safari, which has a whole new design. It’s also the most controversial new piece of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, to the point where Apple has added the ability to opt out of most of the changes here. The browser is getting an Apple-wide redesign across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS (the latter coming as part of macOS Monterey later this fall), and it’s the biggest visual change in this year’s update by far. When it comes to changes that will impact virtually every iPhone owner, Safari’s update is the most significant thing in iOS 15. Also added are some new audio features to help your phone better zero in on who’s speaking and a blurred background portrait mode.Įven with the new additions here, I don’t think FaceTime is going to replace Zoom or Google Meet as a business solution (nor do I think that’s Apple’s goal here), but iOS 15 does make it much easier to use FaceTime for more casual calls with multiple participants - even if it’s mostly playing catchup here. ![]() There is also the equally long-overdue grid view, which (combined with the new links) makes FaceTime much more of a viable group video chat solution than it was before. It’s not a new vision for Apple’s mobile software as much as a bit of fresh paint and polish for what’s already been here, to the point where it’d probably be fair to call it iOS 14.5 (if Apple hadn’t already released that earlier this year, that is).įaceTime’s bigger updates are coming later this fall IOS 15 was already a relatively minor release, but those delays and omissions leave what is here at launch feeling even more anemic. Other big features are still in the works, too: the new detailed 3D view for Apple Maps is limited to just New York, London, San Francisco, and Los Angeles at launch, while iCloud Plus’ VPN-like Private Relay will start off as a beta feature. The flashy SharePlay feature has been delayed to later this fall, while Universal Control - presumably on deck for macOS Monterey’s release - hasn’t even popped up to try in beta yet. It doesn’t help, of course, that some of the biggest and most interesting features coming to iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 aren’t actually here at launch. ![]() The most incremental and iterative iOS release in years

The outbox, though, is a different matter. If I were to pick some things to look at, I would perhaps lean towards Fear Effect Sedna, the BIT.TRIP games, and maybe Blazing Beaks? Maybe? You could also just save your money, as there’s nothing that rare or exceptional in the inbox. Well, that’s a more manageable list than the last few, at least. The main character’s design reminds me a lot of Maxwell from Scribblenauts, but unless I missed some very big twist along the way, I think it’s just coincidence. It’s also relatively easy, which makes the couple of hours it runs more of a relaxing evening than a challenging affair. The game is extremely vague with its narrative, so don’t expect much satisfaction there if you’re the sort that wants a clear story. This is a short but fairly sweet puzzle platformer with a truly striking art style that helps the game stand out in a very crowded genre. Not a bad thing, if that’s the flavor you’re after. Basically, this is one of those roguelites where as long as you keep playing, you are sure to eventually overcome any obstacle. Death only costs you some temporary stat boosts and special skills, as your character will survive with all gear intact. You customize your character’s look then head into the various dungeons, which take the form of procedurally-generated open areas with lots of enemies to battle, traps to avoid, and loot to find. If you’re in the mood for a very low-friction roguelite action game, you may want to look into this game. I’ll have to figure it out soon, because I will be reviewing this one early next week. It feels like something between a light turn-based RPG and an idle game, and I can’t decide if it’s a bunch of fun or just taking advantage of my baser instincts. All of your stat games come from training, which involves playing various mini-games. The idea here is that you play through the story by fighting turn-based battles, and in between them you use the resources you earned to improve your training facilities and upgrade the town’s services. This is a very hard game to put down once you get into it. Enjoy! This meant that only those strong enough to fight off attackers remained in the castle and that the food supply would last much longer. One of the castle owner’s main line of defence against siege was to send all women, children, old, weak and sick people out of the castle. Sieges could last for months, usually until the inhabitants of the castle ran out of food and were starving. ![]() Attackers would surround a castle with both men and catapults so that no one could enter or leave the castle. However, if those inside the castle were aware that attackers were mining underground, they would often mine from the castle to meet the attackers underground and there would be a sword battle.Īnother good way of attacking a stone castle was by placing it under siege. The advantage of mining was that the attack could not be seen by those living in the castle. They would then set a charge and make an explosion which would make the walls crumble and collapse. Attackers would dig a tunnel underground up to the castle walls, under the gatehouse if possible. ![]() This type of catapult works by twisting rope as tightly as possible so that it acts like elastic when the arm is released.Ī good way of attacking a stone castle was through mining. Castle owners prevented this type of attack by piling earth up against the castle walls so that the Belfry, which was on wheels, could not be pushed near to the castle.Ī variety of catapults or siege engines were developed during the Middle Ages to fire stones, fireballs or other objects such as dead sheep, cattle, or plague victims, at the castle walls or into the castle itself. Ladders inside the Belfry allowed attackers to climb to the top under cover and get into the castle. The Belfry was a large structure on wheels that could be pushed up to the castle walls. To prevent this type of attack the Belfry or Siege Tower was developed. However, ladders had the disadvantage of leaving the man climbing the ladder subject to attack by arrow, boiling water or oil, or by being thrown to the ground if the ladder was pushed away from the wall. Ladders were used by those attacking a castle to climb over the walls and fight the castle inhabitants within the castle walls. This would make it a considerable force that could seriously weaken and possibly destroy doors or walls. The battering ram was particularly useful since the weight of several men would be put behind it. Although pickaxes could be used against castles with thinner walls, it would take a very long time to knock a hole through a castle with very thick walls. The thick stone walls of the Stone Keep castles were difficult for men to knock down. Fire has little effect on a stone castle. This was one of the reasons why Motte and Bailey castles were soon replaced by Stone Keep castles. As the fire spread through the castle those living inside would be forced to leave allowing the attackers to take them prisoner or kill them. The fire might be started by building a bonfire against the outer wooden fence (palisade) or, more usually, by archers shooting fire-arrows into the castle. The main methods of attacking a Medieval Castle were:įire was the best way to attack the early Motte and Bailey castles since they were made entirely of wood. An en-suite full bathroom off the master bedroom (aka Master Suite) is one of the most desired features by today’s home buyers. To consider a space a full bathroom, it must contain four key fixtures: a toilet, sink, bathtub and shower. This scenario is rare, but also counts as a three-quarter bath. ![]() In some cases, this may be a bathroom with a toilet, sink and bathtub without a shower. If you don’t need or want a tub, omitting the bulky feature can help a smaller bathroom feel less cramped and look less cluttered. This design is often used in smaller bathroom’s that won’t accommodate a tub comfortably. Three-Quarter BathroomĪ three-quarter bathroom includes a toilet, sink/vanity and an upright/stall shower. A half-bath is great to have near areas you commonly use to entertain or for general guests to use. Again, commonly found near common areas of the home. Half BathroomĪ half bath is a water closet that includes a sink. We often see water closets included in large laundry rooms, where a sink for handwashing is nearby. These are commonly found near common areas of the home that simply don’t have space or need for a half or larger bath. Water ClosetĪ water closet is a room containing only a toilet, also referred to as a quarter bath. Luckily, when it comes to the layout of your bathroom, we don’t need to reinvent the wheel.Ī good first step is knowing exactly what “type” of bathroom you are looking to remodel or create. From water closets to extravagant spa master bathrooms, any space can be luxurious with the right design. Whether you are looking to remodel an existing space, or create a new bathroom from scratch, layout makes a big difference. ![]() Normal inquiries about admission requirements, educational programs, and financial aid should be directed to the university. 8 - 10Ĭhanges in gun purchases are one way in which these attitude changes after mass shootings may translate to behavior. 6, 7 Surveys have shown that most US citizens view mass shootings as indications of underlying societal issues, which have the power to alter people’s fear of victimization and perceptions of gun control policies. 5 As a result, the fear that mass shootings inspire in the public has been disproportionate to their frequency. 4 These shootings often receive high media coverage for instance, mass shootings such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting were voted the top news topic of 2012 by the Associated Press, higher even than the presidential election. 3 Nevertheless, these events offer an important lens for understanding connections between gun violence and public opinion, with implications for gun violence prevention as a whole.Īlthough relatively rare compared with other forms of gun violence, mass shootings are extremely high profile. 2 Mass shootings contribute to only a small fraction of this mortality and morbidity burden, at less than 1% of US firearm deaths. ![]() 1 In 2017, more deaths were attributable to firearm injuries than to motor vehicle traffic crashes (12.2 vs 11.9 deaths per 100 000 people). Gun violence in the United States constitutes a serious public health crisis, causing more than 30 000 deaths annually. Identification of media coverage and fatalities as significant factors underlying this association invites further study into the mechanisms driving gun purchase changes, holding implications for public health response to future gun violence. Higher-fatality shootings had an inverse association with handgun purchase decreases (odds ratio, 0.73 95% CI, 0.53-1.00 P = .049).Ĭonclusions and Relevance The findings of this study suggest an association between mass shootings and changes in gun purchases, observed on a comprehensive timescale. Shootings receiving extensive media coverage were associated with handgun purchase increases (odds ratio, 5.28 95% CI, 1.30-21.41 P = .02). A total of 26 shootings (21.0%) were associated with increases in gun purchases and 22 shootings (17.7%) were associated with decreases in gun purchasing. Results Between November 1998 and April 2016, 124 major mass shootings and 233 996 385 total background checks occurred. Main Outcomes and Measures Identification of major mass shootings significantly associated with changes in gun purchases, and the identification of event-specific factors associated with changes in gun purchases. In the logistic regression, examined factors were the shooter’s race/ethnicity, the region in the United States in which a shooting occurred, whether a shooting was school related, fatalities, handgun use, long gun use, automatic or semiautomatic gun use, media coverage level, and state political affiliation. Analyses were performed between June 6, 2016, and February 5, 2019.Įxposures For the time-series analysis, each mass shooting was modeled as an exposure. Then, logistic regression was used to identify event characteristics associated with changes in gun purchases. Interrupted autoregressive integrated moving average time-series modeling was used to identify events associated with changes in gun purchase volume. All mass shootings resulting in 5 or more individuals injured or killed during the study period were also identified. Objectives To test the hypothesis that mass shootings are associated with gun purchasing in the United States and to determine factors associated with gun purchasing changes.ĭesign and Setting In a cross-sectional study, monthly data on US background checks for all firearm purchases, handgun permits, and long gun permits between November 1, 1998, and April 30, 2016, were obtained from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. ![]() Importance Increased understanding of public response to mass shootings could guide public health planning regarding firearms. It is has been suggested, for example, that it might be cool to use the ECF discovery APIs to allow an instructor to make assignments available through the environment itself students might obtain those assignments by merely being in network proximity to their instructor's computer. We have discussed some crazy ideas of where we might take the Eclipse IDE for Education. Our next most immediate focus is to provide support for other languages commonly used in post-secondary education such as Scheme and Prolog (Scheme support is expected soon, pending a positive outcome from our IP due diligence process). We anticipate that students will use this environment in their first months of learning and then progress to a more complete Eclipse configuration. To that end, the current version provides a streamlined environment featuring stripped down versions of wizards for creating common elements. Our initial efforts are focused on providing an environment with reduced clutter that allows students to focus on their immediate requirement of getting classroom work done. The environment provides support for programming languages that are commonly used in university courses, including Java, Scheme, and Prolog (though only Java is supported for the time being). The Eclipse IDE for Education is a version of Eclipse streamlined specifically for use by university and college students. ![]()
